8/29/44Chinese Soldiers Battle to Reopen Burma Road

Chinese soldiers advance cautiously on aJapanese gun position on the Salween River front in southwestern China,as their unit pushes forward in the drive to reopen the Burma Road.The only Japanese found in the earth-covered pillbox were dead ones.Commanded by Chinese Marshal Wei Li-huang,the soldiers are numbers of the Chinese Expeditionary Force which,with aU.S.liaison unit,is attempting to make ajunction with the forces of U.S.General Joseph W.Stilwell in upper Burma.The junction will permit linking of the old Burma Road and the new Ledo Road,providing adirect supply route from India into China.
